Great Product; Happy Dog
This Yak chew is a great product from a good company. We had to stop using it. I rescued a one year old eighty pound German Shepard mix from our local shelter who had been “unaddopted” or abandoned several times because it was too big, too active, too hard to control, etc. And, frankly, all those issues existed also with me, except it was an exceptionally smart dog and I had the time, patience, and resources to work through all that. Plus, with 31 years in the Infantry, I do “Dog” pretty good: there is only one Alpha in our house and it isn’t the dog. He came to me with a reputation of a massive chewer, so I got tthe biggest Yak chews available from this nice firm and the monster loved them. I would give them for about five minutes after each meal, or four times a day. A chew lasted a couple of days and I would throw it away when it got hafway used up for safety as the dog was capable of swallowing it by then. However, there must be salt in them, as the dog began drinking large amounts of water and started having a few accidents in the house. To stop that, we discontinued the chews. I gave the unused ones to a friend whose dog spends more time outside (mine is indoor only except for walks every four hours). What I discovered in all this doggie drama was that I did not have a long-term chewing issue anyway. Once the dog settled in, he was just fine with his several giant size rubber Kong chew toys, mostly mouthing them and throwing them around the house. Now that he has a safe secure peaceful home, he leaves everythig else alone. The lesson in all this is that each dog is going to have unique requirements and react to various products and environments in different ways. And, customers are going to have a variety of concerns and opinions, some reasonable and informed, and some not. I for one absolutely do not trust nylon non-edible chew toys and my vet said she categorically did not like elk horn chews as they are too hard for most dogs’ teeth (I had gotten a couple of them from this same firm; the dog loved them, but I had to put safety first, listen to my vet and stopped giving him those too as a precaution, even though my dog is just an alligator with fur and long legs). The bottom line of all this babel is that a one-size-fits-all product or solution is not the answer for every customer or pet. This chew was fantastic, but just not for us.

So I think these are entirely too hard for teething puppies, so I gave it one star in that category. Use this for dogs who have their full grown adult teeth. And be sure they are āscrapingā the toy. Not biting down on it. It will soften with saliva. But only slightly. I reiterate: DO NOT USE THIS FOR TEETHING PUPPIES.For flavor, my dog immediately took it. She adores these things. Raven took it immediately and chews on it until itās almost gone. Then I confiscate it and put it in the microwave. It really does puff up and become brittle! The downside is the smell of slightly burnt cheese fills the house. Personally I hate the scent of cheese, but if you donāt mind then it should be fine.Longevity. This is extremely expensive for how long your dog gets to chew it. Mine goes through one a day. This is not a toy, consider it a treat. And I also donāt recommend leaving this as a kennel treat. They go too quickly for that and you could end up with a choking dog easily. Instead, this is amazing for when you have guests over. Raven is a reactive dog. And my step grandpaās VA nurse came to the house. Raven is usually hyper and happy to greet visitors. Sheās about 1 year 7 months old. But Iām trying to teach her to not jump and to coexist peacefully around guests. I gave her one of those and she went out there and greeted the nurse, but then laid down on the ground and chewed away at this for the entire duration of the nurse being here. She wasnāt disruptive, and I was there to monitor her. So longevity? One star.In summary: this is a great treat for those with a little extra spending money. Itās a temporary chew treat and is good for occupying your dog while you entertain guests. However, it should never be used as a kennel treat. Because of the shape and the size, as well as the sandpaper like grooves on the side, this would do some damage to the throat if swallowed and then extracted.If used responsibly, this is a great treat and I highly recommend it. Passed the Baby Beagle Test!
My beagle puppy Dolly, is a typical teether. She is picky when it comes to chew toys. Bully sticks are stinky and never last long enough. Rawhide or collagen chews aren’t safe enough, so yak chews are my go-to for her.I’ve tried different brands of yak chews. Dolly loves them, but some brands just don’t last long enough. I have FINALLY found one that appeals to her taste and will last longer than five seconds.Plus, the fact that this is a Veteran-owned company is perfect. As a U.S. Army Veteran, I can feel good about purchasing this superior product.
