We do a lot of travelling with our pup, Cletus. We walk alot of dog parks and campground doggy parks and it always makes me nervous that he will contract something. Please Read If Your Dog Has Kidney Disease
I’m writing this not out of anger, but out of grief and love—for my dog SuzyQ, and for every pet owner who deserves clearer warnings.Four days ago, I applied Amazon Basics Flea & Tick Topical for Medium Dogs to SuzyQ, my 23 lb senior dog with stage kidney disease. She was on a vet-prescribed kidney diet (Hill’s K/D), gabapentin, and a liver supplement. She’d been stable, happy, and playful—until last night.She stopped eating. This morning, she followed me around quietly, eyes wide, mouth slightly open. By afternoon, she collapsed. I rushed her to the vet, but it was too late. They said her body couldn’t recover.I didn’t know that dogs with kidney disease may not tolerate flea medications well, especially topical treatments like this one. There was no warning on the packaging about renal sensitivity. No alert that dogs with compromised detox systems—like SuzyQ—could suffer systemic reactions days after application.Her symptoms matched known side effects of fipronil toxicity:• Lethargy• Loss of appetite• Vomiting and diarrhea• Behavioral changes• CollapseIf I had known, I would have chosen a gentler option. Easy to apply. Only last 3 to 4 days. Dogs still scratching frequently. Bought enough for 5 dogs so not inexpensive.
