“The dogs don’t judge me or give me a motivational speech. They don’t rush me to heal or grow. They sit in my lap and lick my face and make me feel chosen. And sometimes, it hits me hard that I’m doing the exact thing I say I cannot do. Changing.”

Pound for Pound is an inspirational tale about one woman’s journey back to herself, and a heartfelt homage to the four-legged heroes who unexpectedly saved her life.

For seven years, Shannon Kopp battled the silent, horrific, and all-too-common disease of bulimia. Then, at 24, she got a job working at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, where in caring for shelter dogs, she found the inspiration to heal and the courage to forgive herself. With the help of some extraordinary homeless animals, Shannon realized that her suffering was the birthplace of something beautiful. Compassion.

Shannon’s poignant memoir is a story of hope, resilience, and the spiritual healing animals bring to our lives. Pound for Pound vividly reminds us that animals are more than just friends and companions – they can teach us how to savor the present moment and reclaim our joy.

    Honest and real
Another real life story about how dogs heal us…Me. Kopp is very open about her disease and the hard work it takes to heal and how she allowed the dogs surrounding her to help her heal…kudos….Reading stories like these help others to realize we all have our struggles and how important it is to be able to know we are not alone and reinforces how important dogs are, not only as companions but also because of their ability to love unconditionally! I especially needed this reminder….

    Read. The. Freaking. Book. Now.
If I could give this book six stars I would. Shannon’s words spoke to my animal loving, lost girl soul in a way so profound and personal, it’s as though she knew exactly what I needed to hear. If you are a women plagued with the social construction of “beauty,” a child of an addict, an animal lover, a rescue/shelter worker, a pitbull advocate, or just a human being with a heart, then I dare you to read each page without feeling utterly struck with awe. I am all of these things and I can’t thank this book enough for allowing me to feel the opposite of loneliness for over 300 perfect pages. Shannon’s story is raw, honest, and heart melting. Genuine is the only word I can use to synthesize a description of her writing style. Her lessons on the absolutely broken rode to finding self love and the way she connects to and heals through the unconditional love of a misunderstood breed is bound to change you in one way or another. In conclusion, Read. The. Freaking. Book. You won’t regret a single second of doing so. Thank you Shannon.

Inspiring read for women in recovery, animal lovers, and anyone looking to find purpose and passion in their life!
I couldn’t put this book down and finished it the day I got it! I am in recent recovery from an eating disorder myself and could relate to so much of Shannon’s story. This book is beautifully written. It’s vulnerable, raw, depicts the anguish so many women feel, and includes the inspiring journey to recovery. I am also an animal lover myself and found myself in tears many times throughout the book. This is a book that will draw you in and you’ll find yourself connecting to Shannon throughout her life story. I can’t recommend this book enough!! You will be inspired no matter what your background.

    Heartwarming, honest and eye opening.
As an avid pitbull lover and parent, it’s wonderful to see them highlighted as the incredible dogs they are.I learned so much about bulimia from this brave woman who shared her story. Eating disorders manifest themselves in so many ways. This is just one. This book reinforced my belief that animals are the best therapy and medicine in the world.

    Why
It was great the love this woman took and cared for animals at the shelter. It seems that they also gave her the love she was missing in her bulimia

    I Loved This Book!!!!
Shannon Kopp is my friend’s daughter, and I bought this book to support them. I am so very pleased to say that it is truly a fabulously written account of Shannon’s long struggle with bulemia. I laughed, cried (actually sobbed), cheered, and became personally invested in the lives of both the people and dogs that helped to tell her story. It is a well written, thoughtful account of her journey, and I am pleased to be able to highly recommend reading this book.

I bought this book quite awhile ago. It sounded inspiring but I didn’t care for it and put it down after only reading a few pages. Probably just a personal thing.
